What is the origin of the term “spirit gum”? Is it related to the 40s-50s comic book character “The Spirit”?

Spirit gum is a substance used to affix wigs, beards, and other costume accoutraments, thus avoiding visible pins and strings.

Doubtful, as spirit gum has been around longer than “The Spirit,” even though he was a bit of a gumshoe.

The name of spirit gum is probably because it is the sticky substance (gum) of pine tar mixed with alcohol (spirits).
